Janine's Place - Upcycled Wool and More {Etsy} - Review & Giveaway! (Closed)

A few months back when CJ started outgrowing his small wool diaper covers, I searched for a Canadian cloth diaper retailer specializing in wool so I could begin stocking up on the next size. In doing this, I stumbled upon Janine's Place, an Etsy shop selling wool covers (both soakers and longies), upcycled wool slippers (how cool!), carrier teething pads and other nifty hand-made goodies.

The shop is located very close to me in Woodstock, Ontario and the owner (Janine - you probably could've guessed that, huh? ;) is not only a talented seamstress but also a mama to a beautiful one-year-old daughter and a holistic nutritionist. That's quite the resume! :) Janine was eager to partner up with me on a blog review and giveaway, and provided me with my review package in person at a lovely store called Organic Oasis, which has since become one of my favourite places to shop.

My package consisted of two items, which Janine customized just for us - a pair of 100% upcycled merino wool night time longies (sewn from scratch to fulfill CJ's rise, waist and inseam measurements) and organic bamboo/flannel teething pads designed to coordinate with my Ergobaby carrier. Let's take a look at each one!

Here are the longies. Anyone else compelled to play tic tac toe on 'em? ;)

Merino wool is known for being soft, and these longies are no exception! They definitely feel nice & smooth against the skin. Since we went with night longies, Janine sewed a single layer of fabric on the legs and a double layer in the soaker area for added all-night protection (vs. day longies on which she sews a single layer throughout).

Janine definitely nailed the fit, dont'cha think?

At first I thought they were a tad on the small side, but Janine reassured me that they'd stretch a significant amount and thus give us a long period of wearing time. She was right!

Performance-wise, these guys have been bullet-proof! We generally outfit CJ with a fitted + doubler and the longies on top, and we haven't experienced a single leak in 20+ wearings. The inside does get damp after a full night of wear, but the moisture never makes it to the outside of the wool. When we change him in the morning, we just turn the longies inside out and they're generally dry enough to wear again the next night if we want.

When we received the longies, CJ was workin' the army crawl so he really put the leg material through the wringer for the first month or so. Happily, they held up quite well to all the punishment, ending up with the general integrity intact and just some superficial pilling around the knees.

In terms of maintenance, we've followed standard wool care procedures (lanolize and hand wash) and have had no issues! Note that Janine offers a wool lanolizing service for those who'd rather not deal with this part.

Next up - the teething pads! I hafta say pads are a must when using a soft-structured carrier. If your baby is teething, he/she will inevitably latch onto your carrier straps and could potentially damage them, especially once those chompers start coming through! It's also a heck of a lot quicker and easier to wash a pair of pads than the whole carrier itself.

Janine makes her teething pads with two layers of organic bamboo French terry fabric and one layer of printed flannel. Unlike many/most pads on the market (which have applix closures), she uses resin snaps on hers for a more secure fit and improved longevity.

When I first tried our pads out, CJ immediately began chomping on them so I eagerly snapped this pic.

....and then I realized I had them on inside out! The off-white terry side is supposed to be on the outside as this material feels nicer on baby's gums. Like this!

Either way, the pads fit perfectly (not too loose and not too tight!) and the pattern does, indeed, look nice with the "Sienna Sunset" style of my Ergo.

I've now worn the pads on many occasions, and they've proven themselves quite durable. CJ "uses" them a lot, I've washed them several times and they still look almost brand new.

The one critcism I have is that they tend to ride up so they're above baby's head. This is easy to adjust when front carrying, but a bit tougher when you're sporting baby on your back. That said, my other pair of pads do the same thing so this isn't a specific issue with the pads from Janine's store.

Overall, I'm happy with both items we got to try from Janine's Place. The longies are soft and comfy, fit well, perform great and have held up quite nicely over time, and the teething pads are lovely, durable and obviously enjoyed by our little guy! Now I'm eyeing up those wool slippers as potential stocking stuffers for a few folks on my list! ;)

Princess Grace Bowtique: Review and Giveaway (Closed)

My daughter's hair, much like its owner, has a mind of its own.

We usually just let it do its thang 'cause, well, she's a toddler and at this age she can get away with it. ;)  But occasionally I do try to clean things up for daycare, for a special occasion, or when it's clear the unruly strands are beginning to irk her. Historically I've tended toward standard piggies secured with those teeny little elastics but then, a couple months ago at a play group, I spotted a gal about S' age sporting the most adorable flowered headband. Aha, I thought, now that's a stylish AND practical way to tame those toddler tresses - I must score me some of those! I turned to Etsy and a quick search led me to Princess Grace Bowtique, a shop based in Toronto, Ontario which offers a wide variety of hand-made baby, toddler and girl hair accessories: no slip hair clips, hair bows, felt hair clips, headbands and flowers.

The owner is an active mom of three - two older boys and (as you likely guessed!) a little princess - the shop's namesake! Princess Grace models her mom's lovely creations, and the two boys help test out colour combinations for new items to sell. When I contacted the owner about reviewing a selection of her products on my own little wild-haired child, she was game and sent me a generous assortment of headbands, no slip hair clips and specialty felt clips.

I received three headbands (two satin and one lace), each one adorned with a purty jewelled flower in a different colour and style.

Each of the bands is stretchy enough to fit from baby to adult. (In fact, my hubby helpfully agreed to try on the purple lace one and, indeed, there was room to spare. Of course I snapped a pic but in the interest of remaining married I'll refrain from posting it here. ;) The flowers are all constructed well and firmly affixed to their bands, so they should have some good longevity.

I also received two sets of no slip hair clips (flower and ladybug designs) and two specialty felt clips (princess crown and blue jewelled flower designs).

All of these clips feature 1 3/4" partially-lined "alligator" style closures, and are lined with silicone no-slip grips to help them stay in place. All ribbon ends have been heat sealed to prevent fraying.

Now for the fun but challenging part - getting my own super-active princess to model the whole set! Naturally, as a 2-year-old, she's not a fan of sitting still nor does she love stuff going into her hair. As such, it took several sessions, but I finally managed to capture her in all her new bling!

First, a few comments on usability. I find the clips the easier of the two accessory types to secure in place; the alligator style (IMO) is vastly superior to the snap style found on most commercially-available clips as it allows you to basically apply and remove a clip with one hand, it's gentler on your little one and it's easier to get a snug fit. The no slip grip strip (try saying that 10x fast!) certainly keeps things in place through lots of active play, however it does surrender pretty easily to yanky little hands, which is good as this prevents rippage. The headbands are a bit trickier to get in the right spot with li'l one's hair smoothed down properly; distraction definitely helped here! Once in place, however, they stay put very well.

Alright, it's slideshow time!

Yellow flowered headband - love this style and colour on her!

Pink headband with white flower - I do find this flower a bit on the large side for her but overall still quite precious!

Rope flower hair clips - love these! Girly but not over-the-top, and she's a "pink girl" so they coordinate well with most of her outfits.

Ladybug hair clips - very cute and more casual. I like sending her to daycare in these....

...and look! Still in place after a fun-filled morning playing at the park!

Blue jewelled flower felt clip - one of the more sophisticated items we received.

Can we say "2 going on 22"??! *tear*

Purple lace headband - got her to model this one after bath time by enticing her with a bribe to stay up a bit later. ;) Her hair's always extra curly when she gets out of the tub, which added to the utter adorableness of this shot!

Princess crown felt flip - admittedly, neither my daughter nor I are the biggest fans of this piece. I think it's too big and chunky for S' fine hair and (as you can see) she wasn't the most thrilled to show it off either. I could see it looking pretty cute on a gal with thicker, coarser hair, though!

All in all, I'm very happy with the package of hair accessories we received from Princess Grace Bowtique - they're pretty, stylish, practical (the clips in particular) and appear to be very well made. Browsing through the shop, there are many more styles that would look great on our daughter, so a future shopping trip to add to her collection may be in store! :)

Stitched by Hand (Etsy): #Review & #Giveaway! (Closed)

Holly from A Mommy's Blessings is one amazing gal! Mama to six super-sweet children, she home schools, cooks just about everything from scratch, gardens, practices natural parenting and green/eco-friendly living and manages to keep her home clean & organized amidst the chaos! :) I'm not sure how she finds the time, however she also blogs on pretty much a daily basis, featuring weekly themed posts such as Mommy Mondays and "Blessed to be His" Wednesday, and LOTS of awesome reviews/giveaways! Her writing style is friendly, accessible and engaging as well! Holly is one of my absolute favourite bloggers, so if you're not following her yet yourself, what are you waiting for? :)

If all of the above isn't enough, Holly is also a talented seamstress! She hand crafts many items for her family and regularly sells her goods at a local farmer's market. In the past, she has had some experience selling on Ebay, however she recently decided to continue her online sewing adventure by opening an Etsy shop. Thus, Stitched by Hand was (re)born!

So what all can you find here? Beautiful patchwork clothing, messenger bags, soft toys, crocheted hats, mama cloth, nursing pads and much, much more!

You can even find gorgeous glass beaded jewelry made by her 7-year-old daughter! (Creative talent obviously runs in the family!)

Holly is continously adding new merchandise and hopes to expand her line of products to include hand-made soaps, lotions and lip balms as well. Is there anything this mama can't do? :)

Naturally, I was excited and honoured when Holly contacted me about partnering on a blog review/giveaway for her shop! She was kind enough to send me a super-cute Stripey Giraffe stuffed baby toy/teether for review purposes, and I also purchased a Crocheted Owl Baby/Toddler Beanie Hat. I simply could NOT resist the cute factor! Since this was a custom item, Holly walked me through how to properly measure our daughter's head to ensure she'd get us a good fit. The resulting measurements put S into the 1-3 year size, which means she'll get plenty of wear out of it!

The two items arrived together wrapped very simply in tissue paper with an enclosing bow and small label. I love that Holly uses minimal packaging to reduce waste.

Here's our Stripey Giraffe!

Product description: This soft and squishy giraffe is made of cotton fabric, stuffed with cotton batting, and even has ribbon tags for baby to chew on. Your sweet little one will love snuggling on this adorable stuffed animal!
And our sweet li'l owl (who's had her fair share of caffeine for the day! ;)

Product description: Whoooo loves owls as much as I do? Your little one will be the cutest hoot on the block in this adorable crocheted owl hat made of soft acrylic yarn, trimmed with 100% cotton yarn, and either closed or little button eyes! Ear flaps and braided ties make it even more darling!

Now, I'm no seamstress myself (far from it, as evidenced by the jagged, clumpy stitchwork marking my sad attempts to repair torn seams in our duds), however even I was able to appreciate the quality worksmanship in these items. No flaws, and lovely attention to detail. Holly clearly knows what she's doing and takes her time to get things right!

I also felt just fine giving both of these items to S right away. Since all of Holly's items are hand-made and shipped directly, I wasn't worried about exposing S to nasty factory dust. And, of course, since she is a natural-minded mama who strives to provide a toxin-free life for herself and her family, I know the materials used are safe for my little one in general!

As expected, Starryn's first reaction to Ms. Owl was to rip her off, but she does this with everything put on her head! Once we had her sufficiently distracted making froggy faces, however, she seemed quite happy with the situation.:)

Despite the fact that she's on the low end of the age range, the hat already fits her quite well! It's snug enough that the brim stays up above her eyes now, but there is definitely room for growth.

The soft 'n' thick material and ear flaps ensure that our li'l one's noggin will be fully protected in the chilliest of weather, which is vital up here in the "Great White North"! ;)

Finally, it doesn't hurt that just about everyone who sees her in the hat can't help but comment on the utter adorable-ness. :D

As for Mr. Giraffe, we've discovered a super fun game to play with him at bed time! The space between his legs is perfect for perching him on the edge of her crib, so we put him up there and let her bat him back off, laughing hysterically! Lather, rinse, repeat. (It's amazing what entertains a 1-year-old, huh?) Sometimes we slide him along the edge and let her chase him, which is fun too! The size is just perfect for her little hands.

She hasn't taken to chewing on his ribbon tags, but she appears to be past the "chew on anything" stage herself. I'd imagine that a younger baby (4-8 months-ish) would be all about gumming at those puppies!

We leave the giraffe in her crib at night. I love that its surface is smooth so it won't trap nearly as much dust as a plush toy would, plus it's machine washable which is another bonus!

All in all, I {{heart}} these two items, and there are so many other things I would love to have from Holly's shop! How about you?

Buy It:

Want a crocheted hat or animal stuffy of your own? Or how about some mama cloth or nursing pads? Or.... the list goes on! Review: Sophie Leash from Lil Divas Bowtique

A sure sign that a toy has reached astronomical levels of popularity is when 3rd party vendors create accessories specifically catered to that toy. Such is the case with Sophie the Giraffe, the 100% natural rubber sensory toy from Paris which has recently become ubiquitous in the homes, carseats and strollers of little ones everywhere here in North America! I was even told that I would be a bad mother if I didn't get a Sophie for our DD-to-be, so of course I registered for one and it was one of the earliest purchases made off of our registry. :)

During S's first couple months, she didn't care so much for Sophie. It's not as bright and cheery as some of her other toys and she wasn't yet able to grasp and mouth to feel its awesomeness first hand. But somewhere within her 3rd month, she really began to heart the li'l giraffe so it became a mainstay in our diaper bag on day trips. Then around this time when I was just getting into the giveaway "scene", I came across a contest at Not Just Baby Brain to win a Sophie "leash" from an Etsy store called Lil Divas Bowtique. My first reaction was amusement. Really? A strap designed specifically for cette petite giraffe française? But when I thought about it some more, I realized that a) Sophie would probably be DD's predominant travelling companion for some time, and that once she started realizing that "throwing is fun!" it would be quite practical to have the giraffe on lockdown and b) Although the leash was marketed specifically for Sophie, its design did not preclude usage with other toys as well. And browsing around the Lil Divas Bowtique shop, I fell in love with all the adorable little patterns. So I entered the contest....and won! :D

Before I get to the leash itself, I want to mention that Shannon (the shop owner) was super friendly and helpful when it came to selecting and delivery the prize. The customer service experience definitely left me feeling warm & fuzzy! I ended up deciding on the "tumbling monkey" pattern - so stinkin' cute! The order was delivered promptly and it came lovingly wrapped and paired with a business card for the Bowtique. What a nice touch!

The leash is simple but practical in design. It is made of a high-quality ribbon with snap closures on both ends. And, most importantly, the tumbling monkeys are just as cute as advertised! ;)

Each end snaps onto itself to form a loop. The "Sophie end" is a set size, but the end which affixes to a car seat, stroller or what have you offers two sizes depending on the girth of what you're attaching it to and/or the length of strap you want to achieve.

One thing I really like is that when snapped into place, the closures are nice and snug. Baby would need to eat a helluva lot of spinach to get that puppy detached!

So how does the leash hold up in practice? Well, we've been using it S's carseat for a few weeks now. The length of the strap is perfect - long enough for S to move it around in her hands and get it up to her mouth, but not too long that it can fall out of reach. She has definitely reached the "let's drop/throw toys just for the fun of it" stage, but Sophie hasn't yet fallen victim to this trick! ;) Sometimes she will gnaw on the ribbon itself rather than Sophie, and so far the ribbon has held its own nicely through all the gumming and drool. (Time will tell if it will be able to withstand little teeth!)

So far, we've used the strap with Sophie exclusively, but it would definitely work with the majority of her other hand-held toys; anything that has a small loop or handle feature, really! Good to know in case she gets tired of her Sophie or if we just want to mix things up.

All in all, I love this oh-so-practical li'l accessory! I've won quite a few prizes through giveaways over the last couple months, and this is one of my favourites!

Review: Charis Designs diaper cover wraps

I've planned to begin reviewing some of my cloth diapering (and other baby-related) products for awhile now, but my current addiction to entering giveaways has made this challenging. :) Soooo in order to get the ball rolling on this, I thought I'd sacrifice sleep for one night. The wisest idea? Perhaps not. But hey - I'm a new mama. I'm resilient!!!!

So, where to start? Well, remember these covers? I've been using them on S now for a month and a half and have yet to comment on how they're working out. Plus, the seller has a cool story which I think would be great to profile! On that note, here we go....

Background:

Charis Designs is an Etsy shop owned and operated by a WAHM mom named Kim. She and her family sold their small homestead in order to move onto a sailboat and cruise around. In order to help make ends meet, she decided to sew cloth diapering products and other accessories. She sews using a solar powered machine, so her products are truly made "green"! Charis is the name of their sailboat, so she decided to pay homage to this in the name of her Etsy shop.

The Transaction:

As I mentioned in my previous post, I did not work with Kim directly on the transaction; rather, I purchased three of her wraps from another local mama who was no longer cloth diapering. However, Kim's feedback rating is 100% positive on Etsy, so I would feel extremely confident doing business with her!

Technical Details:

Kim's wraps are made with 1 mm PUL waterproof fabric and fold-over elastic, and close with aplix loop velcro. They come in 4 sizes (small, medium, large and extra large) and each lists very precise measurements and weight recommendations to help the prospective buyer. For example, the medium size (which I purchased) has the following specs:

- Fits 10-19 pounds
- Waist adjusts 13 inches to 18-21 inches
- Rise 15 inches

Wraps are made with leg gussets for added protection.

Laundering recommendations are to wash in cold or warm water and hang to dry.

My Review:

When I first saw these wraps listed on Kijiji, I thought they looked super cute! I especially loved the blue one with the stripes. It turns out that Kim accents many of her wraps with ribbons on the crossover tabs; a very nice touch!

The three wraps I purchased are in traditional "boy" colours - blues and greens - however my husband and I feel that sticking to girly pinks and the like for our DD is limiting. Heck, we even painted her nursery a shade of blue! That said, the vast majority of her clothing is still pink, so it's nice to mix it up with some dipes in "stronger" shades:

My first observation upon receiving the wraps was that they're really lightweight compared to others I own. My second was "Wow, check out those leg gussets! Nothing's getting by those babies!"

My final thought was that I couldn't wait to try them out on S!

So how do they fit? Very well, I must say! S was about 10.5 pounds (low end of recommended range) when I first tried one on her and I was able to get a snug fit over her skinny waist & legs. As I suspected due to their weight, they also result in a relatively trim fluffy bum over her Bummis prefolds. And hey, S seems to like wearing them!

The gussets are as awesome in practice as they look! The wraps have yet to leak since we started using them, even with some of her most plentiful EBF poops. Look how nicely it hugs her leg:

The only thing I was initially somewhat concerned with in terms of comfort was that the fold-over elastic felt a bit stiff. However, this doesn't seem to bother S and the elastic doesn't leave any red marks, so this turned out not to be a problem.

I should also mention that despite the recommendations, I actually wash the covers in hot water with the rest of my CD laundry (tsk tsk) for convenience. Regardless, they've held up exceptionally well over the last 1.5 months and I have no reason to think they're going to degrade anytime soon.

If I could make one constructive criticism, it is that the wraps do not have laundry tabs. Due to this, I attach the tabs to the regular velcro in order to avoid diaper chains. So far, they're getting clean using this method, though I wonder if there'd be enough agitation to remove all the grime with a really bad blow-out on the cover. In any case, tabs would solve things here.

Also, I'm not sure they'll last up until the suggested 19 pound upper limit as they strike me as having similar measurements to my other covers which fit up to 16 pounds, however time will tell here!

All in all, I'd wholeheartedly recommend these wraps to anyone looking for a high-quality, reliable, trim and snazzy cover! Plus, it's always nice to support other mamas, isn't it?

Buy It:

You can buy these wraps from Kim's Etsy store here. At prices ranging from $9.50 to $12.25 USD (depending on size and style) plus shipping, they're a very affordable addition to your stash!
